08: Creation Care – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 22, 2012 by Joyce GriffithSeptember 9, 2014Joyce Griffith

“Can you believe this? They’ve put a week’s lesson on the environment into our church’s lesson study guides.”1 “They have?” Brenda reached the coffee table and found her copy of the guidebook her husband Matt was talking about. She rustled through the pages until she found the one labeled February 18-24. “It doesn’t say anything about the environment, Matt. … Continue reading –>

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 22, 2012 by Michael FrackerSeptember 9, 2014Michael Fracker

Key Thought : Because God has created this world to be our home and given us dominion as His stewards, we have a responsibility to care for our environment.   [Teaching plan for “Creation Care” February 22, 2012] 1. Thursday: Humankind’s Dominion

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 22, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonFebruary 14, 2016avatar

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. . . . And God … Continue reading –>

Was Ellen White Green?

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 22, 2012 by Cindy TutschDecember 8, 2012avatar

Was Ellen White an environmentalist? Was she concerned with Planet Earth, with ecology, recycling, contaminants, the effects of materialism? Although Ellen White lived most of her life in the nineteenth century before plastics were invented, before nuclear power, before nitrates and anthropogenic chemicals contaminated our rivers and streams, and before greed for oil drove much … Continue reading –>

Wednesday: Sabbath and the Environment

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 21, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonFebruary 14, 2016avatar

“Hell and Destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied” (Prov. 27:20, NKJV). How does the truth of this text directly impact the whole question of creation care and the danger our exploits pose to the environment?  1 As the creation statement said, part of the reason for the issue with our environment today has … Continue reading –>

A Thin Green Line – Christian Environmentalism

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 20, 2012 by Lillianne LopezJuly 23, 2013avatar

I am a Christian who believes that God created everything in six literal days and then literally rested on the seventh day. Having said that, I’m not sure that I’ve spent enough time thinking about how that should shape my interactions with the things that God created in, say, the first five days of Creation … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: Creation Care

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 20, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonFebruary 14, 2016avatar

The issue of the environment, and taking care of the environment, isn’t specifically and openly addressed in the Bible. Of course, there are a lot of specific issues that the Bible doesn’t address. What the Bible does do, and does again and again, is give us principles that should be applied to all areas of … Continue reading –>

Monday: A Statement on Creation Care

Man Watering Tree

How, then, do Seventh-day Adventists look at the question of the environment? How do we get involved and yet seek to keep a right balance? Below is an official statement, voted by the church leadership back in 1995.1 “Seventh day Adventists believe that humankind was created in the image of God, thus representing God as … Continue reading –>

Sunday: The Lobster Liberation Movement!

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 18, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonFebruary 14, 2016avatar

Years ago an environmentalist entered a seafood restaurant. There before him, sitting in a large tank, were half a dozen Maine lobsters that probably wouldn’t last the night. A customer would pick the one out that he or she wanted to eat, and before long the lobster would be sitting on someone’s plate next to, … Continue reading –>

Sabbath: Creation Care

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 17, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonFebruary 14, 2016avatar

Memory Text: “And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it” (Genesis 2:15). Key Thought: How should Christians relate to the environment? What should we, as Seventh-day Adventists, think about the … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
