10: The Bible As History – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: The Bible is constituted in history. Biblical history moves in a linear direction from an absolute beginning to an ultimate goal: from Creation to the restoration.

1. Have a volunteer read Isaiah 37:33-37.
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- How does God deliver His people in Jerusalem against Assyria?
- Personal Application: How can you remember that the God who saved Israel is the same God in whom you trust today? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states: “Archeological evidence doesn’t always support what the Bible records. How can you trust that the Bible is accurate if historical records don’t support it?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Daniel 1:8, 17-20..
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- How do the early discussions of Daniel correspond to the act of God using him to influence millions throughout history?
- Personal Application: What are some things that we need to “purpose in our hearts” today? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “What do Daniel’s faith and obedience to God’s will in his teenage years in a foreign land tell us about his upbringing?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Matthew 26:56-57..
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- Who was Caiaphus, and why was Jesus taken to him?
- Personal Application: Is it important or helpful to have historical evidence that Caiaphus was the high priest in the first century? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “Why was Caiaphus so enraged at Jesus? Weren’t the Jews looking for the Messiah, the Son of God? Why did he rip his clothes?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Hebrews 11:1-5.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- Is faith a belief in something or someone? How do we know if our faith is real? What do we learn about faith in Hebrews 11?
- Personal Application: What decisions are you facing now? How do you make the choices that you do , and why? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
