Key Thought: Isaiah appeals to the people to give up their thoughts and ways and return to God. He insists the pardoned be merciful because of the gift of God’s forgiveness.

1. Have a volunteer read Isaiah 55:1-7.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- If we are to buy and sell without money, what is this text really saying to us?
- Personal Application: What kind of things do we spend our money on which is not bread? Is this saying we waste our money? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “We can’t earn salvation, it is a free gift. So why does the Bible seem to say that it could cost us everything in order to receive it?” How would you respond to your friend?
2. Have a volunteer read Isaiah 55:7-9.
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- What is the context in which the Lord talks about how His ways and thoughts are higher than we can imagine? What is He saying that is so hard for us to understand?
- Personal Application: Is there anyone that has done or said something that hurt you that you haven’t forgiven? Can God forgive them? Can God forgive you is you don’t? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states: “I don’t want God to forgive someone who hurt my family or committed a horrible crime. Why should they be forgiven for things they did that no human being should ever do?“ How would you respond to your relative?
3. Have a volunteer read Isaiah 58:1-12.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- What is wrong with the worship and fast the people were offering to God?
- Personal Application: How do we keep from being caught up in our religious rituals so that we don’t see that we really aren’t following the Lord correctly? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “What are some of the things that God considers true acts of worship? Are these acts in themselves true worship? Are the principles and motives behind the acts important?” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Isaiah 58:13,14.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- What kind of day is the Sabbath supposed to be?
- Personal Application: When we think of what the Sabbath represents, how do we bring joy to others and ourselves in kind acts and helping others? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
