New Jerusalem

The Gospels are replete with references to the kingdom of God, all cumulatively testifying that a new order has been inaugurated in and through Jesus. What does Luke 11:2 say about the kingdom of God? Whose kingdom is it, and why is that so important? To say that this kingdom is God’s is not just … Continue reading –>

All My Heart

Who has the heart? With whom are our thoughts? Of whom do we love to converse? Who has our warmest affections and our best energies? If we are Christ’s, our thoughts are with Him, and our sweetest thoughts are of Him. All we have and are is consecrated to Him. We long to bear His … Continue reading –>

Elijah at Mt Carmel

Read Luke 22:24-27. Even as the disciples were preparing for the Last Supper, they were arguing about who among them would be the greatest in the kingdom. How does Jesus respond to their foolishness, and what is so revolutionary about His reply? Jesus’ answer is unique in the history of leadership. Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, Alexander, Julius … Continue reading –>

A tiny mustard seed is resting on a fingertip.

“And the apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith.” Luke 17:5 I still have the keepsake my father gave me as a teen. It’s a mustard seed encased in glass. This trinket obviously symbolizes the power of small faith doing big things. In various ways over the years I have seen this same symbolism … Continue reading –>

[Thought questions for Following Jesus in Everyday Life June 2, 2015] Jesus the theologian. If theology is the study of God, was anybody ever better qualified than Jesus to teach this subject? The Sower

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, in their eternal council before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4), laid the plan of salvation. That is, even before the first human was created and, of course, before the first humans sinned, God had a plan in place to rescue the world. The plan is … Continue reading –>

Vigilance and fidelity have been required of Christ’s followers in every age; but now that we are standing upon the very verge of the eternal world, holding the truths we do, having so great light, so important a work, we must double our diligence.-Ellen G. At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
