God’s Word is our Authority

Black man holding Bible in front of church.

Occasionally, at church or the Adventist school where I teach Bible and evangelism, someone will ask me, “What do we believe about such and such?” My response has always been, “I don’t know what you believe, but here is what I, and many Seventh-day Adventists believe,” and I show them in the Bible what I … Continue reading –>

Are Adventists Old-Covenant Christians? (Part 3)

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 20, 2017 by Marcos David TorresJune 25, 2024avatar

In the previous post we examined the oldest systems of Protestant covenant thought. The two systems to emerge we labeled as belonging to “Category A: Covenantalism.” They include both the Westminster Confession and the Second London Baptist Confession. We also had the opportunity to see that Adventist theology has a lot of similarities with these … Continue reading –>

Order in Society and the Church

Read the following passages. What does Peter say in these texts about the importance of both government and church leadership, and how Christians should respond to both? How should his words be applied to our situations today, regardless of where we live? 1 Pet. 2:11-21 1 Pet. 5:1-5 Peter lived at a time when Christians … Continue reading –>

Second Coming

Read the following texts, and note what is said about future events: 1 Pet. 1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 1 Pet. 1:17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time … Continue reading –>

13 Major Themes in 1 and 2 Peter – Discussion starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 19, 2017 by Joyce GriffithJune 23, 2017Joyce Griffith

The end of this study. What are two or three blessings that you have experienced in our twelve weeks of study of the two epistles of Peter? Besides studying these two messages, have you also considered aspects of the life of Peter as he mentored his fellow disciples and the early church? Although as Protestants … Continue reading –>

Singing with Inspiration – Lesson 13

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 19, 2017 by Corinne KnopperJune 19, 2017avatar

The first Bible text in this weeks lesson, Isaiah 53:5, 6, reminded me of two songs from Handel’s “Messiah”; Chorus 24 “Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs” and “No 26 Chorus “ All We Like Sheep Have Gone Astray”. The Memory Text then follows the story very closely with many beautiful hymns of the story … Continue reading –>

Monday: How Should We Live?

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 18, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonJune 22, 2017avatar

A theme that Peter returns to more often than any other is posed by the question he asked in 2 Peter 3:11: “Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness?” (NRSV). Read the following texts. What does Peter … Continue reading –>

Sunday: Suffering, Jesus and Salvation

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 17, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonJune 22, 2017avatar

Read the following passages, and note what each reveals about salvation: 1 Pet. 1:2 “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.” 1 Pet. 1:8-9 “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though … Continue reading –>

Friday: Further Thought – The Day of the Lord

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 15, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonJune 9, 2017avatar
Spectacles on Bible

Further Thought: From our perspective, it can seem as if the Second Coming is greatly delayed. Jesus obviously knew that we would feel this way, and in some parables He warned against what could happen if we weren’t careful and watchful during this time. Take the parable of the two servants in Matthew 24:45-51 (mentioned … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
