  1. What a beautiful perspective, William! Maybe it is because I have had Phil. 2 on my mind for the last couple months, but the final sentence of your post left me thinking of Phil. 2:5. Jesus shares with us HIS mind so we will be compelled to act as He would if were He here. This is our natural response when we have the mind of Christ. (1 Cor. 2:16)

  2. After a lifetime of teaching 4th, 5th and 6th graders, I especially appreciate this story that shows what I saw so frequently. My 9 - 12 year-olds often demonstrated compassion that seemed beyond their years. I was blessed to spend each day in the company of such fine Christians. "A little child will lead them", indeed.

  3. My wife and I recently got the book, The Highly Sensitive Person, which points out that we all have different degrees of sensitivity on many aspects, physical, emotional, etc. Just starting to read it, I realize why some of my own difficulties have occurred, and I can sympathize with the reactions of the 5th grader. It is likely that he and the 6th grade girl are both more sensitive emotionally than some of their classmates, a good quality to have, whether innate or learned. In any case, thank you for the story and its connection to our Friend and our common mission. May God help us to spread His compassion.

    • I agree in my own experience that we all have different degrees of sensitivity. What matters to you may not matter to others thus it also tells the level of ones EQ (Emotional Quotient) I was told that your EQ is high if you can move on quickly past the hurt. Yet some of us have varying degree of coping. God knew all the pots and He knew what each can endure therefore each were given different kind of heat. What matter to you may not matter to others.

  4. William's post speaks of a capacity called compassion. It is interesting that when God revealed His character to Moses (Ex 34:6,7), the first characteristic He revealed was compassion. All the subsequent qualities listed flow from and are anchored in compassion.

Unfortunately the final characteristics (Ex 34:7b) are badly translated into the English bible with the Hebrew conveying qualities that are in keeping with compassion, not contrary to it. The Hebrew essentially has God saying, while I cannot at this point in time stop the consequences unleashed by those who desire and choose to walk in the ways of the Kingdom of Darkness, I will do everything that I can to limit the extent of impact of those consequences to (and within) 3-4 generations
    - rather than the thousands of generations that these consequences would otherwise run to.
