Sunday: The Downward Spiral of Sin

Jonah Praying in Belly of Fish

Compare Ephesians 4:17-32 with Colossians 3:1-17. How does Paul advocate for believers to live in a way that encourages the unity of the church? In the prior section, Ephesians 4:1-16, Paul’s theme was the unity of the church. When we compare Ephesians 4:1 and Ephesians 4:17, we note how similar these two exhortations are about how to walk or to live. This resemblance suggests … Continue reading –>

Friday: Further Thought ~ The Unified Body of Christ

Spectacles on Bible

Further Thought:  Two notes help to expand our study of Ephesians 4:7-10: 1. Translating Ephesians 4:9. Some translations indicate that the descent occurs before the ascent (e.g., NKJV, “He also first descended”; KJV, RSV, ESV, NASB). Other translations follow the Greek text more closely, leaving the issue of the timing of the ascent and descent open (e.g., NIV, “What does ‘he … Continue reading –>

Jesus as Baby, Child and Adult

What danger threatens the Christlike maturity of the church? Ephesians 4:14. Paul perceives an environment not unlike our own in which various ideas, such as “every wind of doctrine” and “deceitful schemes” (ESV), are thrust upon believers. He uses three sets of images to describe the dangers of wayward theology: (1) the immaturity of childhood, “so that … Continue reading –>

Wednesday: Gifts of the Exalted Jesus

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 8, 2023 by Sabbath School LessonJuly 26, 2023avatar
The Gift

Drawing on Psalm 68:18, Paul has just described the risen, exalted, conquering Jesus as giving gifts to His people from on high. What “gifts” does the exalted Jesus give, and for what purpose? Ephesians 4:11-13. Paul identifies four groups of “gifted” people as part of the treasure trove of the exalted Jesus that He gives to His church: … Continue reading –>

Jesus Giving Bread

“However, he has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ. That is why the Scriptures say,     ‘When he ascended to the heights,     he led a crowd of captives     and gave gifts to his people.’” “Notice that it says ‘he ascended.’ This clearly means that Christ also descended to our lowly … Continue reading –>

7: The Unified Body of Christ – Singing with Inspiration

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 6, 2023 by Corinne KnopperAugust 6, 2023avatar

The book of Ephesians shows us “How to Follow Jesus in Trying Times”: Hymn 623 – I Will Follow Thee, My Saviour so that our actions will always speak louder than our words. Paul encourages us to ask  Come, Holy Spirit – Hymn 269 to help us Be Like Jesus – Hymn 311, all because  The Church … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
