Spectacles on Bible

Further Thought: Ellen G. White, “Instructed in the Law of God”, pages 661-668, in Prophets and Kings. “ “Now they must manifest faith in His promises. God had accepted their repentance; they were now to rejoice in the assurance of sins forgiven and their restoration to divine favor. … Every true turning to the Lord brings abiding joy … Continue reading –>

Thursday: The Joy of the Lord

The “joy of the LORD is your strength” (Neh. 8:10) serves as a reminder that it is God’s will that we rejoice and enjoy life. Most of all, it is not just any kind of joy, but it is the joy that comes because we know God and the reality of His love. Delighting in God, in … Continue reading –>

When Ezra opens up the Word of God, the Hebrew Torah, the people stand up. Before Ezra reads, he blesses God. After he reads, the people respond with “Amen, Amen!” (Neh. 8:6; NKJV) in unison as they lift their hands toward heaven. They then bow their heads down and worship with their faces to the ground. Read Nehemiah … Continue reading –>

6: The Reading of the Word – Singing with Inspiration

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 4, 2019 by Corinne KnopperNovember 4, 2019avatar
Playing notes of hymns

The first hymn to come to mind with the title of this week’s lesson study is: Hymn 272, “Give Me the Bible”. Sabbath afternoon’s introduction to the week shows the surrounding nations in awe of the accomplishment of completing the building. We all can say: “How Great Thou Art”, Hymn 86. The Children of Israel … Continue reading –>

6: The Reading of the Word – Discussion Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 4, 2019 by Joyce GriffithNovember 4, 2019Joyce Griffith

The wall is complete, and the law is read. The completion of the wall was not an easy task, but once it was up and protecting the city of Jerusalem, the Children of Israel were ready to celebrate! The Bible account states that Ezra was asked to bring the Book of Moses to a special platform … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: Reading and Interpreting the Word

Read Nehemiah 8:4-8. How was the reading of the Law done? There were two groups of 13 men who stood with Ezra during the reading. The first group of 13 (Neh. 8:4) helped to read the Word of God, and the second group of 13 (Neh. 8:7) helped with the understanding of the passages. We do not have any information … Continue reading –>

Monday: Reading and Hearing the Law

Hearing the Law

Ezra “brought the Law” before the assembly to read. What did he read to them? Only the Ten Commandments over and over for half a day? The reference to the book of the Law is to be understood as the five books of Moses, Genesis through Deuteronomy, known as the Hebrew Torah. The term “law”, … Continue reading –>

Sunday: The People Gather

Read Nehemiah 8:1-2. What should this tell us about how important the Word of God was to the people? When the Jews finally completed the building of the wall and moved into Jerusalem, they all gathered in Jerusalem’s open square in the seventh month. The seventh month, the month of Tishri, was perhaps the most important … Continue reading –>

Paying Our Debts While Forgiving Our Debtors

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 31, 2019 by William EarnhardtNovember 7, 2019avatar

Earlier this summer I went to a baseball game with a friend who picked up the tickets earlier. I did not get the opportunity to pay him for my ticket the night of the game, so a few days later I took him to dinner. When the waitress  brought us the check, I took it … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
