Wednesday: Humbled Before God

Nehimiah Praying

Read Deuteronomy 30:1-6. What promise was given here to the Hebrew people? What must this promise, among others like it, mean to men like Ezra and Nehemiah? Ezra and Nehemiah knew the prophecies. They knew that God was going to bring the people back from captivity. We saw in Nehemiah 9 that they understood their history … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: Where are the Priests?

Priest at altar

No question — as we saw yesterday, it was an amazing fulfillment of prophecy that brought the Jews back from Babylon. But as with anything that involves humans, problems existed. And one of the big problems was that, despite all the wonderful promises of restoration after the exile, many of the Jews did not want … Continue reading –>

9 Trials, Tribulations and Lists – Discussion Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 25, 2019 by Joyce GriffithNovember 25, 2019Joyce Griffith

Lists and so forth. Be honest. Did you cringe just a bit when you saw “lists” as one of the topics for this week’s lesson? Do you remember memorizing long and painful lists of various kinds in classes you took? How often in your work and home life do you come across lists that make … Continue reading –>

9: Trials, Tribulations, and Lists- Singing with Inspiration

Playing notes of hymns

The first word in our Sabbath School lesson title brings us our first hymn: “The Glory Song”, Hymn 435. The second word in the title, Tribulation, is found in: Hymn 8, “We Gather Together”, verse 4 of Hymn 348, “The Church Has One Foundation”, Hymn 441, “I Saw One Weary”, Hymn 532, “Day By Day” … Continue reading –>

Building the Wall

Scan over the lists in Ezra 2:1-70 and Nehemiah 7:1-73. What do you notice about them? The repetition of Ezra 2:1-70 (the list of those who returned from the Babylonian captivity with Zerubbabel and Joshua) in Nehemiah 7:1-73 is deliberate. Again, these lists might seem boring to us, but they reveal an important point, which is … Continue reading –>

This One Was Born There….

Becoming One Through His Love

The leaders of the people were living in Jerusalem, the holy city. A tenth of the people from the other towns of Judah and Benjamin were chosen by sacred lots to live there, too, while the rest stayed where they were. Nehemiah 11:1 NLT  I love living in Florida, but that does not keep me … Continue reading –>

Sunday: The God of History

Christ holding the stars and trimming the lamps

Read Ezra 1:9-11 and Daniel 1:1-2. How do the texts in Daniel help us understand what Ezra was referring to? Notice how in Ezra details are given, while in Daniel the big picture was presented. Together, though, these texts show that the Lord is in control. “The history of nations speaks to us today. To every nation and … Continue reading –>

Spectacles on Bible

Further Thought: Read Ellen G. White, “Consecration”, pages 43–48, in Steps to Christ. “The ministration of the earthly sanctuary consisted of two divisions; the priests ministered daily in the holy place, while once a year the high priest performed a special work of atonement in the most holy, for the cleansing of the sanctuary. Day by day the … Continue reading –>

Thursday: The Temple

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 20, 2019 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 17, 2019avatar
The Most Holy Place

Look at Nehemiah 10:32-39 again. Why were the temple’s practices essential for the Israelites, as shown by “we will not neglect the house of our God” (Neh. 10:39, NKJV)? Why was the Temple so important for the faith as a whole? (See also Heb. 8:1-7). The Israelites pledged to take care of the temple. Even though they were a small group … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
