8: God and the Covenant – Discussion Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 19, 2019 by Joyce GriffithNovember 19, 2019Joyce Griffith

A sure covenant. We have agreements, pacts, contracts, and other forms that lead to a commitment to carry out certain duties or fill requirements in business and other activities of life. What is the difference between the legal documents we use in business and the agreements we seal in our spiritual walk with Jesus? Are you … Continue reading –>

8: God and the Covenant – Singing with Inspiration

Playing notes of hymns

The covenant, in the Memory Text, was sealed by the leaders, Levites and the priests, just as much as God sealed the covenant with Abram in Hymn 264, “O for That Flame of Living Fire”. The Children of Israel had their special way of putting their covenant in place with God. Hymn 347, “Built on … Continue reading –>

8: God and the Covenant-Teaching Plan

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 18, 2019 by William EarnhardtNovember 18, 2019avatar

Key Thought: God is faithful to keep His promises. We should trust and cling to His promises. November 23, 2019 1 Have a volunteer read Nehemiah 10:1, 28-29. Ask the class what the main point of this passage is.  Why did they have to separate themselves from the people of the land in order to … Continue reading –>

Abraham’s Promises Are Your Promises.

The Abrahamic Covenant

A member of a church in which I had recently spoken asked me to come to her home. She was very upset because a neighbor claimed to be  a witch and put a curse on her home and family.  The lady church member believed in God but  was afraid of what this curse might mean.  … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: Covenantal Structure

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 18, 2019 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 17, 2019avatar

Bible scholars recognize that there is a typical structure to biblical covenants; this was even seen in covenants made by the ancient Hittites. That is, God communicated to the people in a manner that they, in their culture, could especially understand. The covenants that were common during the time of ancient Israel had the following … Continue reading –>

Monday: Covenants in History

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 17, 2019 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 15, 2019avatar
Tabernacle in the Desert

After the flood, God began again, now with Noah and the people who came afterward. With them, too, He sought a relationship, and central to that relationship was the idea of covenant. The Bible identifies seven major covenants that God has made with people: 1st Covenant – Adam (Genesis 1:1-3:24) 2nd Covenant – Noah (Genesis 6:1-9:29) 3rd … Continue reading –>

Sunday: The Idea of the Covenant

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 16, 2019 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 15, 2019avatar
Hearing the Law

Read Nehemiah 10:1-29 (and refresh your memory by reading Nehemiah 9:36-38). Who is making this covenant, and why did they enter into it? Although only the leaders signed the document, the text pointedly notes that all of “the rest the people” entered into “a curse and an oath to follow the Law of God” (Neh. 10:28-29, NIV). What was … Continue reading –>

Sabbath: God and the Covenant

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 15, 2019 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 11, 2019avatar

Read for This Week’s Study: Neh. 10:1-29, Gen. 4:8-19, Heb. 13:20, Joshua 24:1-33, Neh. 10:30-39, Heb. 8:1-7. Memory Text: “‘And because of all this, we make a sure covenant and write it; our leaders, our Levites, and our priests seal it’. … we will not neglect the house of our God” (Nehemiah 9:38; Nehemiah 10:39, NKJV). What does the Bible mean when it … Continue reading –>

History Doesn’t Have to Repeat Itself

The Robe of Righteousness

Have you ever been haunted by your past? Over a decade ago I was preaching during the first worship service and I guess I was all wound up in what I was preaching, because an elder motioned to me that it was time for Sabbath School. I had a real passion for what I was … Continue reading –>

Friday: Further Thought ~ Our Forgiving God

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 14, 2019 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 8, 2019avatar
Spectacles on Bible

Further Thought: Read Ellen G. White, “Confession”, pages 37-41, in Steps to Christ. In Nehemiah 9:25, the Hebrews talked about how their ancestors “delighted themselves” (NKJV) in God’s great goodness. The verbal root is the same as the name Eden, as in the “garden of Eden” (Gen. 2:15). Perhaps, the best translation would be “they edenized themselves” if only edenized … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
