The Bible is God’s Love Letter, and not Just a Collection of Proof Texts — 5 Comments

  1. Thank you for this William. I have met people like those you’ve mentioned. Though not true of all of them, a lot seem to think Jesus is less important than prophecy. This really troubles me.

My spiritual life grew a lot when I started studying the gospels and not for a specific purpose, just to get to know Jesus better. I’ve finished Mark and am now in chapter 10 of Matthew. It has been such an amazing experience. I wish all our church members would do something similar.

And lest some of you think that this will take away from the distinct doctrines we hold, I can assure you it won’t. I now see glimpses of the Sabbath and other teachings all over the Bible. They are there, but they are not meant to be isolated. They are part of the bigger story of Jesus, and yes it really is a love story!

  2. I always enjoy your messages William. They’re so relatable.I love what you wrote “We are so concentrated on being right that we forget to be relational.” That quote hit the nail on the head.I hope I can find the balance between defending my faith and expressing God’s message of hope and love.

  3. When I first came to the Adventist Church, someone asked if I had read Revelation yet. I said i hadnt. She said dont. So of course i went home and read it right away. At the end, i was in a daze.for about 4 hours, two of which i had to be at work during! All i could think was that this Bible that i had never believed to be the word of God, was so different than i had ever seen it and that i had just read the perfect ending to the Perfect Love story. Thank you for calling it such.

    • Amy, thank you so much for sharing this! We are currently studying Revelation in a mid-week meeting, so this is especially relevant for me.

I believe God spoke to you when you first read Revelation, because you heard exactly the message He put in that book for us! Too many people focus on the “beasts” rather than Jesus. And they come away from reading the Revelation confused by all the “beast” images – even when they are perfectly fine with cartoons depicting political parties and nations as “beasts.” 😉

I just want to mention one more thing: The Bible is not like other books that you can read once and “get” it with one reading. Each time you read it again, you get a little more truth. It’s like a deep mine that requires digging to get the precious minerals.

      Keep digging!

But spending time in the Bible is even more than that: It is time spent in the presence of God, and we can’t help but be changed when we spend time in His Presence.

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
