Wednesday: Jesus Wept
What does this verse tell us, not just about the humanity of Jesus, but how in that humanity He related to the suffering of others? See also Rom. 12:15.
In John 11:35 Jesus demonstrated sympathy, empathy, and pity from His core. Even though He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead, the grief of a family with whom He was very close affected Him physically and emotionally.
However, Jesus was weeping not only over the death of a dear friend. He was looking at a much bigger picture, that of the suffering of all humanity because of the ravages of sin.
“The weight of the grief of ages was upon Him. He saw the terrible effects of the transgression of God’s law. He saw that in the history of the world, beginning with the death of Abel, the conflict between good and evil had been unceasing. Looking down the years to come, He saw the suffering and sorrow, tears and death, that were to be the lot of men. His heart was pierced with the pain of the human family of all ages and in all lands. The woes of the sinful race were heavy upon His soul, and the fountain of His tears was broken up as He longed to relieve all their distress.” – Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 534.
Think about her words: Jesus, in ways that none of us ever could, saw the “pain of the human family in all ages and in all lands.”
We ourselves can barely stand to think about the pain of those whom we know or with whom we are close. Then add to that the pain of others that we read about in the news. And yet, we have here the Lord, who knows things in ways that we don’t, weeping over the collective grief of humanity. God alone knows the full extent of human woe and sorrow. How thankful we should be that we get only faint glimpses of that sorrow, and sometimes even that seems too much for us. Try to imagine what must have been stirring the heart of Jesus at that time.
General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, said, “‘If you can’t cry over the city, we can’t use you.’”-Roger S. Greenway and Timothy M. Monsma, Cities: Missions’ New Frontier (Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker Pub. Group, 2000) p. 246. What should those words say to each of us? |
Truly,very truly God is compassionate.God sees some of His creation going down the wrong path without a care and I can see it grieves Him immensely
jesus weeps with us in our sorrows and seeks to find solutions for us.
Jesus wept. This makes me feel so loved. When we are in pain, Jesus is touched to an extent that he would share a tear for us. He does not only show sympathy but takes us out of all the misery we are in. I've got all the reasons to reach out to other people who do not know how much Jesus loves them and to tell them about His power to help them in their sorrows.
Jesus was deeply sorrowful
For a man to cry openly and weep from His heart demonstrated the extent of His compassion for us
Likewise He sorrows when we sin
Jesus loves us let us love and obey Him so that His tears cease
Am glad we have a savior who knows and understands the sufferings we go through and is willing to help us deal with the consequences of sin--suffering, toil, and death. Friends let us support our Lord in alleviating the pains of one another and celebrate together with those that are rejoicing as indicated in Romans 12: 15 (Rejoice with those that are rejoicing and weep with those that are weeping). We need to forever be grateful to God that life is not all about pain..As the musician rightly put it:
Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He, whose heart is kind beyond all measure,
Gives unto each day what He deems best,
Lovingly its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest
Every day the Lord Himself is near me,
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear and cheer me,
He whose name is Counsellor and Pow’r.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.
3
Help me then, in every tribulation,
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation,
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till with Christ the Lord I stand.
Jeremiah was known as a "man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief". But Jesus was a man of sorrows as well... (Isa 53:3 KJV). In fact even before Jeremiah 'was', the Son of God was already a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.
Jeremiah 9:1."Oh that my head were [a spring of] waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!"
At times I wonder why I find my self sinning, looking at the love of God. He weeps when he sees me going through hardship and he will not only weep but will also come in with a solution in my life. Thank you God for loving me and this world at large.
Jesus wept, because of sin, for the sufferings of all of us. Will I be His hands, His feet, His heart so His tears for me will not have been in vain.
Those words mean we are different people but one body. We have to have sympathy and empathy for each other.
Oh what a mighty God we serve, he weeps for our sorrows, yet he didn't do nothing wrong. Oh what love I am so touched, indeed our God really cares
Christ knew we were never meant to die. He created us with his Father with an intent that we would have everlasting life. Going all the way back to Adam & Eve and that fateful day in the garden when the pair ate the forbidden fruit and they had to be exiled, he knew we would eventually succumb to death - each and every one of us. He has had to witness every single death, and He knows that some will not go to heaven despite his offering up Himself on the cross in our place. If that doesn't make you sad, I don't know what will. Jesus still weeps for those who are lost today.
Our human compassion can not be compared to Jesus coz we are sinful. Only until Jesus and his Spirit transforms us.. we wud not genuinely love and sympathise
we need to a knowledge that Jesus is the Almighty. his weeping don't mean that he has feared to die,except he was showing his real a concern for our sins.
