Key Thought: This lesson dwells in the hope of a resurrection. The reason for this hope can be found only in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.. Lesson 9, November 26, 2016 1. Have a volunteer read Job 13:3-10. a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text … Continue reading –>

Intimations of Hope – Hit the Mark

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 23, 2016 by Curtis HallNovember 25, 2016avatar
U.S. Corpsmen carry a wounded Marine on a stretcher to an evacuation boat on the beach at Iwo Jima while other Marines huddle in a foxhole during the invasion of the Japanese Volcano Island stronghold in this file photo of Feb. 25, 1945.

Running and crawling through waves of artillery, mortar, grenade and rifle fire, a young man risked his life to save his wounded comrades. Not just one time, but scores of times. Putting his own safety aside, he made his way through hellacious gunfire and mortar shelling to rescue the dying. He was a man on … Continue reading –>

Thursday: Images of Hope

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 23, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 24, 2016avatar

Read the following texts. What hope does each of them reveal? Gen. 3:15 “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” Gen. 22:8 “And Abraham said, ‘My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.’ So the … Continue reading –>

Wednesday: Hope Before the Word Began

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 22, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonDecember 7, 2016avatar

Who among us, having gone through what Job did, could utter such a powerful affirmation of hope? His words are an eternal testimony to the reality of his life of faith and obedience. Job had hope, because he served a God of hope. Even amid all the sordid stories of human sinfulness, from the fall … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: Intimations of Hope

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 21, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 26, 2016avatar

“ ‘He also shall be my salvation, for a hypocrite could not come before Him’ ” (Job 13:16, NKJV). This verse follows right after the one we read yesterday. How does it affirm even more the idea that, despite everything, Job had hope, and that his hope was in God? What an interesting line to … Continue reading –>

The cross

“ ‘He also shall be my salvation, for a hypocrite could not come before Him’ ” (Job 13:16, NKJV). Seven days of silence. Have you ever kept quiet about some issue in order to stay out of trouble with others at work or in the church? If so, did it work? Did Job follow that procedure? … Continue reading –>

Monday: Though He Slay Me

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 20, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 26, 2016avatar

When we started this quarter, we went right to the end of the book, and we saw how well things eventually turned out for Job. We saw that, even amid his terrible suffering, Job really had something to hope for. In fact, living when we do, and knowing the end of the whole book, i.e., … Continue reading –>

Sunday: Forgers of Lies

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 19, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 25, 2016avatar

“Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent” (Prov. 17:28, RSV). Whatever one wants to say about the man Job, one can’t say that he was going to sit there amid his sorrow and quietly listen to what his friends were throwing at him. On … Continue reading –>

Friday: Further Thought – Innocent Blood

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 17, 2016 by Sabbath School LessonNovember 24, 2016avatar
Living under the word

Last Sabbath’s introduction began with Albert Camus, who wrote a lot about his struggle for answers, not just to the question of suffering but to the question of life’s meaning in general, which suffering made only more problematic. As with most atheists, he didn’t make much headway. His most famous quote shows how little: “There … Continue reading –>

Conservative Towards Ourselves, Liberal Towards Others

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 16, 2016 by William EarnhardtNovember 30, 2016avatar
Job and friends in desert

After Job heard enough criticism from his “friends,” my heart breaks for him, as I read his words, “I could say the same things if you were in my place. I could spout off criticism and shake my head at you. But if it were me, I would encourage you. I would try to take away … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
