Wednesday: Paul, the “Street Preacher”

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 17, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonMarch 3, 2016avatar

The first-century Greco-Roman context experienced a proliferation of popular philosophers who, in public forums, sought to influence individuals and groups-similar to what street preachers might do today. These philosophers believed that people had an inner capacity to change their lives (a form of conversion). Philosophers would use public speech and private conversation in order, they … Continue reading –>

03: Thessalonica in Paul’s Day – Teaching Plan

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 16, 2012 by Michael FrackerJanuary 2, 2014Michael Fracker

Key Thought : Presenting the gospel in a way that meets the needs of others requires a solid grasp of the Word and an understanding of the needs of those we wish to reach. [Teaching plan for “Thessalonica in Paul’s Day” July 16.2012] 1. Have a volunteer read John 11:48-50. A. Ask class members to … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: The Gospel as a Point of Contact

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 16, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonMarch 3, 2016avatar

Given what we learned yesterday, it is not difficult to see why-when the gospel came to Thessalonica-many non-Jews of the city responded positively. Whether or not Paul was aware of the Cabirus cult before arriving in the city, his Messianic approach in the synagogue resonated with the unique spiritual longings of the local pagans. When … Continue reading –>

Monday: A Pagan Response to Rome

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 15, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonMarch 3, 2016avatar
Man Opening Book With Nothing in It

The pagan response to the powerlessness many Thessalonians felt was a spiritual movement scholars call the Cabirus cult. The cult was grounded in a man named Cabirus who spoke up for the disenfranchised and was eventually murdered by his two brothers. He was buried along with symbols of royalty, and the cult came to treat … Continue reading –>

Sunday: The Romans Arrive in Thessalonica

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 14, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonMarch 3, 2016avatar

Read John 11:48-50. How were the political and religious decisions regarding the ministry of Jesus impacted by the arrival of the Romans in first-century Palestine and Jerusalem? Think through the logic expressed here. In what frightening ways does it make sense? In the context of a civil war among the Greek city-states, the Thessalonians invited the … Continue reading –>

Sabbath: Thessalonica in Paul’s Day

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 13, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonMarch 3, 2016avatar

Read for This Week’s Study: John 11:48-50, 1 John 2:15-17, 1 Cor. 9:19-27, John 3:3-8, 1 Cor. 16:19. Memory Text: “Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible” (1 Corinthians 9:19, NIV). Key Thought: A short study of the context of ancient Thessalonica demonstrates that Paul’s approach to the … Continue reading –>

Further Study: Preserving Relationships

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 12, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonSeptember 2, 2017avatar

“If we would humble ourselves before God, and be kind and courteous and tenderhearted and pitiful(emphasis supplied), there would be one hundred conversions to the truth where now there is only one. But, though professing to be converted, we carry around with us a bundle of self that we regard as altogether too precious to be … Continue reading –>

Inside Story: Lighthouse on an Island

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 12, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonMarch 3, 2016avatar

Laura and Paulo live in town on the island of Madeira in the Mediterranean Sea. Paolo had once been an Adventist, but he had stopped attending church before he married. However he often read from Acts of the Apostles, a book he treasured. One day an Adventist pastor visited them. Laura and Paulo were pleased, … Continue reading –>

Battlefield

Earth in Conflict

Many of us, because of the time and place in which we’ve grown up, have never seen an actual, active battlefield. I am one of those people. All I know of battles, I have learned from movies and TV, and as realistic as those may try to be, they are not like really being there…thank … Continue reading –>

02: Preserving Relationships – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 11, 2012 by Joyce GriffithSeptember 1, 2013Joyce Griffith

A journey through time “Would you look at that? A perfect illustration of the god particle.” Fred held up the second week’s lesson of the Bible Study Guide and pointed to the picture of two hands reaching for each other. “Whatever are you talking about?” Sherry said, her eyebrows lifting toward her hairline. “Whatever in the world does … Continue reading –>

Thursday: Paul Reveals His Heart

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 11, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonMarch 3, 2016avatar

Read 1 Thessalonians 2:17-3:10. What does this passage tell us about Paul’s emotional attachment and relationship to these believers? What can we learn from it regarding how we should relate with those to whom we minister? Paul’s depth of thought and confrontational tone (see, for example, Gal. 1:6, 7; 3:1-4; 4:9-11) sometimes make him appear dismissive of feelings and personal relationships. But … Continue reading –>

Wednesday: Arrival in Corinth

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 10, 2012 by Sabbath School LessonMarch 3, 2016avatar

Acts 18:1-18 contains two major intersections with secular history. The first is the expulsion of the Jews from Rome during the reign of Claudius (Acts 18:2). Information from extra-biblical sources locates this event in A.D. 49. The other major intersection is the mention of the proconsul Gallio (Acts 18:12). Because proconsuls in Corinth were appointed … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
