10: Prophecy and Scripture – Discussion starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 30, 2017 by Joyce GriffithJune 1, 2017Joyce Griffith

Confidence personified. Is there anything at all about Peter speaking as a wholehearted disciple of Jesus that reminds us of Peter the indecisive one? If you said “No!” in a resounding way, how can you and I adopt his certainty in these troubled times? How can the “cunningly devised fables” that appeal to vast numbers of worldlings … Continue reading –>

Singing with Inspiration – Lesson 10

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 30, 2017 by Corinne KnopperMay 30, 2017avatar

Sabbath afternoon’s introduction to our studies for the week made a strong and wise statement followed by a question: “So if Jesus and Peter took the Bible seriously, how dare we do otherwise ourselves?” Peter was sure of what he believed in and he would have had pleasure in singing: Hymn 511, “I Know Whom … Continue reading –>

God's Word - Light in a Dark Place

“And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Pet. 1:19, NKJV). Read this text carefully. What is Peter saying that is so important to us, even today? … Continue reading –>

Jesus Healing a Young Boy

Read 2 Peter 1:16-18. What other evidence does Peter say he has for his faith in Jesus? Besides the prophetic word, Peter was an eyewitness to many of the things that he preached about. Christianity, he said, is not founded on “cunningly devised fables” (2 Pet. 1:16, NKJV), but on real events that happened in … Continue reading –>

Sunday: Jesus in the Old Testament

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 27, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonMay 30, 2017avatar
The Burning Bush

All through his epistles, Peter writes with a sense of certainty. He knows what he is talking about because he knows whom he is talking about. And one reason is that he knows that Jesus was the One to whom the Old Testament prophets pointed. It was Peter’s trust in the Written Word that helped … Continue reading –>

Friday: Further Thought – Be Who You Are

Spectacles on Bible

As we saw, Peter knew that he was soon to die. And he knew (and for a long time, too), how he was going to die. That’s because Jesus Himself had told him. “‘Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are … Continue reading –>

Thursday: Faith in the Face of Death

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 24, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonMay 31, 2017avatar
Faith unto Death

Read 2 Peter 1:12-15. What does Peter mean when he suggests that he is soon to put off his tent/body? Second Peter 1:12-14 reveals the occasion of the letter. Peter thinks he is about to die, and the letter contains his last message or testament. That Peter expects to die soon is revealed by the … Continue reading –>

Are Adventists Old-Covenant Christians? (Part 1)

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 24, 2017 by Marcos David TorresJune 25, 2024avatar

A few years ago I went through one of the most defining seasons of my life. Having been raised a Seventh-day Adventist I had come to the place where I had to confront, once and for all, the legalistic faith I had developed. The journey was both difficult and exhilarating at the same time. The … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
