05: From Pride to Humility – Teaching Plan
Key Thought: We are all fallen human beings, dependant on God for our own existence. How dare anyone become proud, boastful, or arrogant when humility should dominate all that we do.

1. Have a volunteer read Daniel 4:1-20
- Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this text is.
- What happened to the king and why?
- Personal Application: Have you accomplished things in life? How can you take pride in them without being proud? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your relatives states: “Why is it that even though you tell people that if they keep doing something they shouldn’t, they are going to get in trouble; but they still keep doing it and seemed suprized when they get in trouble? Are people that hard-headed or do they deceive themselves somehow?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Daniel 4:27-29.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the most important point is in this passage.
- What does Daniel tell the king to do and why?
- Personal Application: What is the difference between humility and low self-esteem? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your friends states, “Why do you think God gave the dream to Nebuchadnezzar in the first place? Why was he warning the heathen king about his behavior and pride?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read Daniel 4:30-37.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- How and why do things change for the king?
- Personal Application: Have you ever been humbled by God or someone else? What did you learn from the experience? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “People today are not taught to be humble. They are taught to be proud of themselves no matter what they do, good or bad. When people talk, very few people actually listen. They try to one up each other and always talk about themselves. Even on social media, it’s one selfie after another.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Daniel 4:35.
- Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
- What does this phrase mean and why is it notable because of who is saying it?
- Personal Application: Do you believe that people’s pride can be in competition with other people’s? How can we avoid clashes of pride? Share your thoughts.
- Case Study: Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
