Inside Story: Finding the Way Home, part 2

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 16, 2012 by SSNET StaffApril 11, 2015avatar

“Take your things, and don’t come back,” Mother said as Verusca opened the door. Verusca paused and then said softly, “I’ll collect my things when I return from church.” She hurried toward the church, crying. As Verusca entered the church, a woman was telling the mission story of a girl who faced trials similar to … Continue reading –>

Cheese and Holiness

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 15, 2012 by Stephen TerryJune 4, 2016avatar

“…make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders…” 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12, NIV Several years ago, while attending church potluck after services one Sabbath, I noticed a visitor … Continue reading –>

07: Living Holy Lives – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 15, 2012 by Joyce GriffithOctober 30, 2014Joyce Griffith

Introduction: Do you know anyone who seems to have lived a holy life? What was that person like? When you saw that person, did you wish more than anything that you could be holy like him or her? To be honest, how many of us live perfect, holy lives every wakeful minute? What are the consequences of living … Continue reading –>

Living Holy Single Lives

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 15, 2012 by William EarnhardtSeptember 9, 2013avatar

I don’t usually make a big deal either way about being single. I don’t think of myself as a single person, I just think of myself as a person. While I have heard other single people complain about married people treating them differently, I can only count on one hand the number of married people … Continue reading –>

Thursday: Mind Your Own Business (1 Thess. 4:9-12)

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 15, 2012 by SSNET StaffMay 27, 2015avatar

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 and 3:11-13. What aspects of the earlier passage does Paul reaffirm in today’s text? The Greeks had a number of words for “love,” two of which are found in the New Testament. Eros (not found in the New Testament) is the Greek word from which we get the word erotic. It refers to the sexual side of … Continue reading –>

99.9% Pure

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 15, 2012 by Lillianne LopezFebruary 1, 2014avatar

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8 Sounds simple enough, right? No problem – just think about the … Continue reading –>

Wednesday: According to God’s Design (1 Thess. 4:6-8)

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 14, 2012 by SSNET StaffMay 27, 2015avatar

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:6-8. What is Paul saying about sexual immorality? A man who had been sexually active outside of marriage said to a pastor: “As a young man, I learned to see sex and love as one and the same thing. When I got married, however, I discovered that premarital sex destroys not only your … Continue reading –>

07: Living Holy Lives – Teaching Plan

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 13, 2012 by Michael FrackerJanuary 2, 2014Michael Fracker

Key Thought : In a world plagued by sexual lust and perversion, God desires that His followers lead holy lives that are sexually pure and edify others. [Teaching plan for “Living Holy Lives” August 13, 2012] 1. Have a volunteer read I Thessalonians 4:1-3. A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: Not Like the Gentiles (1 Thess. 4:4, 5)

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 13, 2012 by SSNET StaffMay 27, 2015avatar

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:4, 5. What message do you find in these verses? What do they say to you, personally? Although the moral philosophers discussed in lesson 3 attacked many forms of sexual excess, Gentile society as a whole had little or no sexual restraint in Paul’s day. According to the well-known pagan orator Cicero, “If there … Continue reading –>

Monday: God’s Will: Holiness (1 Thess. 4:3)

Sabbath School Net Posted on August 12, 2012 by SSNET StaffMay 27, 2015avatar
Holy Spirit in Form of Dove

First Thessalonians 4:3-8 forms a complete unit of thought. The will of God for each Thessalonian believer is “holiness” or “sanctification” (1 Thess. 4:3, 4, 7, ESV). What Paul means by holiness here is explained by two following clauses. Each believer is expected to “avoid sexual immorality” and to “control his own body” (1 Thess. 4:3, 4, NIV). Paul concludes the unit of … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
