    • Please don't be confuse by 'but' as Paul writes in John 1;17. The law by itself, that Moses brought could not do what we really needed the most and that's righteousness that could only come through Jesus Christ. You can find the purpose of the Law in Romans 7.

      • Read Romans 7. Romans 7:4-6 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. 5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. 6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

    • As Curtis explained, Esther, the word "but" is not in the original Greek manuscripts. Unfortunately, the choice of the translators of the King James Version to insert a "but" when there is none, makes it seems as if John sees the law as an enemy of grace and truth. In actuality, as is discussed in this week's lesson and on the show, they are actually complementary (btw, the submitted manuscript used the NRSV, which is a more literal translation without the "but").

  3. Read John 1:17 with Gal 5:4! 4 If you seek to be justified and declared righteous and to be given a right standing with God through the Law, you are brought to nothing and so separated (severed) from Christ. You have fallen away from grace (from God's gracious favor and unmerited blessing). No "buts" here, just the truth!
I love this verse, because I don't keep the law, but I live a life of faith, and boy oh boy the grace of God is much bigger than I ever thought possible. When I met Jesus, this was the first things he taught me. But then I met nay-sayers who said you must keep the law. But I praise God, because He perservered and kept on teaching me the way of faith. Much better than keeping the law of Moses (10 commandments). And in the end times you will need faith much more than keeping the laws of Moses!

  4. What part of Gal. 3:23-25 is not understood? 23 But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
