“When My Trophies At Last I Lay Down” — 16 Comments

  1. Actually the real start is, "without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him" (Heb 11:6 NKJV). The idea that what we do has a bearing on our salvation is a subtle philosophical dead end. All of our works are too tainted with sin to do us any good in commending us to God (Isa 64:6). We do what we do because of what He has already done for us. In other words, our good works are our response to our salvation. Therefore we are saved solely on the basis of a free gift where God declares us righteous (justification) and then sends us His spirit to work in us in order to bring our lives into conformity with God's laws (the process of sanctification)

    To Seventh-day Adventists I think the last part of Heb 11:6 is perhaps the most important for it is through His promises that we obtain all the power to do the good works. The new covenant is the promise, "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people" (Heb 8:10 NKJV). It basically is the promise of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and is the only way we are sanctified and can do anything right (2 Pet 1:2-4).

  2. Ugh! Rafael, I am glad you have survived. Looks like you had a wake up call a lot more dramatic than the one I described in my post. Thank God for these moments that remind us what life is really all about.

  3. Most all have things that are meaningful memories. The story about your trophies has a moral that is admirable. The choices you have made over the years are exemplary. I have to think your relationship with God is mostly responsible for the decisions that you make. I have to admit to tinges of envy. Every day we are given is a blessing.

  4. Thanks William for relating your story.
    I hope you don't mind, I have used it as a practical illustration for this week's lesson for Monday September 25, when I am to lead in the lesson study with heading 'Boasting in the flesh'.
    Godbless today, Mrs. A Stolz

  5. Oh William, this is a beautiful lesson of humility.
    The laying down trophies will be possible if only we're ready to carry someone's shame, and this attitude will pay a day!

    "On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
    The emblem of suffering and shame;
    And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
    For a world of lost sinners was slain.

    So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
    Till my trophies at last I lay down;
    I will cling to the old rugged cross,
    And exchange it some day for a crown."

    May the Good Lord bless and keep you!

    Thanks for sharing that personal testimony. There is enough food for thought and prayerful contemplation for a very long time. May God continue to bless your ministry.

  7. Thanks, William. The hymn we have sung most during family worship this week, including for opening Sabbath last night, is "Jesus Paid It All". Its last verse is "And when before the throne, I stand in Him complete, I'll lay my trophies down, All down at Jesus' feet".
    Happy Sabbath to all!

  8. Dear William,
    My eyes teared at your devotion to God and I pray that you hold on to the real trophy until the end. I pledge allegiance to the old rugged cross in my corner and we shall meet at the real awards BANQUET- at the foot of the cross! Happy Sabbath indeed.

  9. Thank God through Jesus Christ for your experience, Mr Williams, there is something you are saying to me but my mind seems to be cloudy. I live today and it never came to me, why?. I'm on the road seeking a trophy also and your experience is revealing something to me that I should not seek those trophies but seek the kingdom of God first and all will be added. Thank you again may God bless you.

  10. Dear William
    Very encouraging... and how I need it today. Would it seem silly if I said, I don't know why I am alive today. I am unhappy, sad, devalued, and feel like I'm worth nothing to no one. I have so much sorrow in my heart.
    Your story has given me a lot to think about, thank you for sharing.
    Regards
    Carmen

    • Carmen,

      It seems to me that God might just be taking you through a process to get your attention. Pray along while you do the thinking an listen carefully. God is trying to say something to you. You will understand Him and it will all make sense when He is done getting through.

      May God bless and sustain you. Amen

  11. Thank you for sharing your experience, it has opened the spiritual eyes of a lot of us . The only trophies that I actually need are the trophies of saved souls that we can acquire by planting the seeds of the gospel and continue watering them through love and following the example of our lord Jesus Christ. With constant prayers and the help of Him that died for us , I know that it will be obtained . What a great joy it will be when we can place those trophies before Christ and hear the words "Great job my child "
