Suffering for Christ

Key Thought: Peter told his readers they were to expect trials to test them. They were not to find it strange, but rejoice that they shared in Christ’s sufferings. Lesson 6, May 6, 2017 1. Have a volunteer read I Peter 5:10. a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important … Continue reading –>

Persecution of Christians

Read 1 Peter 4:12-14. Why does Peter say that they shouldn’t be surprised at their suffering? See also 2 Tim. 3:12, John 15:18. Peter makes it clear that to suffer persecution for being a Christian is to partake of Christ’s suffering. It is not something to be unexpected. On the contrary, as Paul would write: … Continue reading –>

Singing with Inspiration – Lesson 6

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 1, 2017 by Corinne KnopperMay 2, 2017avatar

The small illustration at the top of the page for the Introduction brought to mind: Hymn 237, “In The Cross of Christ I Glory” and Hymn 312, “Jesus Keep Me Near The Cross”. 1 Peter 5:10 in the Introduction was repeated again in Sunday’s lesson study, where we are told we will be made strong, … Continue reading –>

6: Suffering for Christ – Discussion starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 1, 2017 by Joyce GriffithMay 5, 2017Joyce Griffith

Persecution for the Christian: coming? going? or always there? When things are going great and you feel good–really good–does the idea of being persecuted for being a Christian have any appeal? In the New Testament book we’ve named 1 Peter, how real was persecution to the early Christian believers? Why do you think Peter felt that … Continue reading –>

Monday: Suffering and the Example of Christ

Sabbath School Net Posted on April 30, 2017 by Sabbath School LessonMay 5, 2017avatar

Read through 1 Peter 3:13-22. How should Christians respond to those who would bring them suffering because of their faith? What is the connection between the sufferings of Jesus and the sufferings experienced by the believers because of their faith? When Peter says, “if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed” (1 Pet. … Continue reading –>

Christians fleeing Jerusalem

Read 1 Peter 1:6, 1 Peter 5:10. What is Peter talking about, and how did he tell his readers to respond to what they were facing? For the first few centuries, just being a Christian could result in a horrible death. A letter written to the Roman Emperor Trajan illustrates how precarious the safety of … Continue reading –>

Living For God – Lesson Plan

Large Heart

Key Thought: Peter appeals for us to live lives that exemplify love, sympathy, humility, harmony, and compassion. He sees this standard as God’s calling for us. Lesson 5, April 29, 2017 1. Have a volunteer read I Peter 3:8-12. a. Ask class members to share a thought on what the most important point in this … Continue reading –>

Spectacles on Bible

“The love that suffers long and is kind will not magnify an indiscretion into an unpardonable offense, neither will it make capital of others’ misdoings. The Scriptures plainly teach that the erring are to be treated with forbearance and consideration. If the right course is followed, the apparently obdurate heart may be won to Christ. … Continue reading –>

Love Covers All

Even in the time of Peter, Christians lived with the expectation of the soon return of Jesus and the end of this present world. We know this because in 1 Peter 4:7 he writes: “But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers” (NKJV). In other words, … Continue reading –>

Forbidden Fruit

In listing the wrong things that people had done in the past, and that they stopped doing after becoming believers in Jesus, Peter also lists what could be called “sexual sins.” Read 1 Peter 4:3 again. What else does Peter list there? Two words have a distinctive sexual connotation: “lewdness” (aselgia, which means “sensuality”) and … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
