Further Study: Justification by Faith Alone

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 20, 2011 by Sabbath School LessonSeptember 9, 2014avatar

“The danger has been presented to me again and again of entertaining, as a people, false ideas of justification by faith. I have been shown for years that Satan would work in a special manner to confuse the mind on this point. The law of God has been largely dwelt upon and has been presented … Continue reading –>

Inside Story: Those Dreaded Adventists

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 20, 2011 by Sabbath School LessonFebruary 5, 2015avatar

Rudy Micelli grew up in a musical Christian family in Brazil. He’s sung praises to God since he was a child. Often he would pretend to sing along with a favorite recording, and as he grew older, singing for God became his passion. While studying some religion classes, Rudy took a class on cults. There … Continue reading –>

Thursday: Does Faith Promote Sin?

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 19, 2011 by Sabbath School LessonAugust 20, 2014avatar

One of the main accusations against Paul was that his gospel of justification by faith alone encouraged people to sin (see Rom. 3:8,6:1). No doubt the accusers reasoned that if people do not have to keep the law to be accepted by God, why should they be concerned with how they live? How does Paul respond to … Continue reading –>

Wednesday: The Obedience of Faith

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 18, 2011 by Sabbath School LessonAugust 29, 2017avatar

Paul makes it clear that faith absolutely is foundational to the Christian life. It is the means by which we lay hold of the promises we have in Christ. But what is faith exactly? What does it involve? What do the following texts teach us about the origin of faith? Gen. 15:5, 6; John 3:14–16; 2 Cor. 5:14, 15; Gal. … Continue reading –>

Tuesday: The Basis of Our Justification

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 17, 2011 by Sabbath School LessonJuly 18, 2017avatar

“And be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith” (Phil. 3:9, NKJV). We should not assume Jewish Christians were suggesting that faith in Christ was not important; after all, they were all believers in … Continue reading –>

Monday: Works of the Law

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 16, 2011 by Sabbath School LessonAugust 20, 2014avatar

Paul says three times in Galatians 2:16 that a person is not justified by “works of the law.” What does he mean by the expression “works of the law”? How do these texts (Gal. 2:16, 17; 3:2, 5, 10; Rom. 3:20, 28) help us understand his meaning? Before we can understand the phrase “the works of the law,” we first need to … Continue reading –>

Sunday: The Question of “Justification”

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 15, 2011 by Sabbath School LessonAugust 20, 2014avatar

In Galatians 2:15, Paul writes, “We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners” (ESV). What point do you think he was making?  Paul’s words need to be understood in their context. In an attempt to win over his fellow Jewish Christians to his position, Paul starts with something they would agree with—the traditional distinction between Jews … Continue reading –>

Inside Story: The Stranger

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 13, 2011 by Sabbath School LessonFebruary 5, 2015avatar

Geraldo Makinano I slumped onto a fallen tree in the thick forest to wait for my partner and fellow student missionary to catch up to me. We still had 20 miles to hike, and we were tired and thirsty. Suddenly I realized that we were in rebel territory where soldiers roam searching for “the enemy.” … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
