Fear. God. Love.

We Are In Jesus' Hands

Test your knowledge. Put your hand over the screen and guess the three most common mental disorders in the US. They are, in order, with lifetime prevalence rates: Anxiety disorders (about 18%), mood disorders (about 10%), and ADHD (about 5%). It might come as a surprise that anxiety rates higher than depression. Actually, anxiety diagnoses … Continue reading –>

The Evidence for Creation

Sabbath School Net Posted on March 13, 2013 by Leonard BrandApril 13, 2018avatar
Large Statue of a Man's Head

It has been more than 150 years since Darwin published his theory of evolution, and many bookshelves could be filled with books discussing evolutionary theory as it has subsequently developed and giving purported evidence to support it. But when the scientists who write these books analyze the evidence that might tell us something about the … Continue reading –>

To Protect and To Serve

Sabbath School Net Posted on March 6, 2013 by Lillianne LopezMarch 18, 2026avatar

“And the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and guard and keep it.” Genesis 2:15 A few years ago, when we were hearing quite a bit about lowering our carbon footprints, my kids and I had an ongoing joke. Because there seemed to be such a … Continue reading –>

Sex and Marriage – Sacred or Sinful?

Sabbath School Net Posted on March 4, 2013 by William EarnhardtApril 6, 2018avatar

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil…Isaiah 5:20 I occasionally hear people, both single and married, tell demeaning jokes about marriage. For example, a Three Stooges fan told me about an episode where Moe asked someone, “Are you married or happy?” That’s a sad joke. While many of us are happily single, we … Continue reading –>

A Love Story

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 26, 2013 by Jennifer SchwirzerOctober 14, 2013avatar

It must have been fall when she first heard him sing, because she remembers how his tenor soared among the fiery maple leaves one hundred feet above ground as she sat by her window. It made her breath come in gasps, as if she was doing the singing. She saw him from a distance many … Continue reading –>

There’s no “I” in Helpmate

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 26, 2013 by Lillianne LopezSeptember 23, 2014avatar

Back in college, I remember friends who spent long hours debating whether or not, in a wedding ceremony, the individual candles that were used to light the unity candle should be blown out after lighting said unity candle. They wanted to make sure the symbolism was just right. It was a few years before all … Continue reading –>

Why Jesus Lives

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 20, 2013 by William EarnhardtDecember 9, 2016avatar
Heavenly Intercessor

Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf. Hebrews 7:25 NLT Charles Spurgeon was born to preach. Mother Teresa was born to care for the poor. Abraham Lincoln was born to break the bonds of slavery. Everyone … Continue reading –>

Plate-Spinning

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 20, 2013 by Lillianne LopezAugust 29, 2017avatar

Do you remember that old circus trick? The performer would have about five sticks standing up straight and he’d put a plate on the end of each of the sticks and start it spinning so that the centrifugal force would hold the plate up and on the end of the stick. As long as the … Continue reading –>

Stickers, Thorns and Other Blessings

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 14, 2013 by Lillianne LopezSeptember 11, 2014avatar

I’m not sure what you call them in your neck of the woods, but where I grew up they were called sticker burs – little globes of pricklies that can cause large amounts of pain to the barefooted and the four-footed. I’ve heard them called sand burs. They’re not like the polite but troublesome burs … Continue reading –>

Captive

Sabbath School Net Posted on February 7, 2013 by Lillianne LopezSeptember 23, 2014avatar

In his book, The Three Edwards, Thomas Costain tells the story of three kings of England from 1272 to 1377 all of whom were conveniently and confusingly named Edward. According to a well-used illustration from Costain’s book, in the mid to late 1300’s, there was a Duke Raynald III. He was extremely overweight. He was … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
