09: One Lawgiver and Judge – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 26, 2014 by Joyce GriffithNovember 30, 2014Joyce Griffith

[Thought questions for One Lawgiver and Judge November 26, 2014] 1. Introduction. Have you ever complained about a new stop sign in your neighborhood? Or about the lack of stop signs or posted speed limits nearby? Imagine that you live in the capital city of the United States, Washington, DC. What would the term “diplomatic immunity” … Continue reading –>

08: The Humility of Heavenly Wisdom – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 18, 2014 by Joyce GriffithNovember 21, 2014Joyce Griffith

“Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you” (James 4:10 NASB) [thought questions for The Humility of Heavenly Wisdom November 11, 2014] 1. “He will exalt you.” Some struggling Christian might read these words by James and say, “Okay. Small price to pay. I’ll humble myself before the Lord, and he’ll … Continue reading –>

07: Taming the Tongue – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 11, 2014 by Joyce GriffithSeptember 2, 2017Joyce Griffith

[Thought questions for Taming the Tongue November 11, 2014] 1. But it’s so strong! Have you ever heard that the tongue is the strongest muscle in the human body? That’s actually a myth. When it comes to strength, the tongue comes in behind the strongest group of muscles—those that close the jaw. Do both types of … Continue reading –>

06: Faith that Works – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on November 4, 2014 by Joyce GriffithFebruary 1, 2015Joyce Griffith

[Thought questions for Faith that Works November 4, 2014] 1. Faith without works is dead. James didn’t mince words, did he? Why did he speak so boldly, so plainly, about how faith is as useless as a dead body in the Christian faith? If the doctor-preacher in the story at the beginning of the lesson had … Continue reading –>

05: Love and the Law – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 28, 2014 by Joyce GriffithOctober 31, 2014Joyce Griffith

[Thought questions for Love and the Law October 28, 2014] Love without Liking. Your lesson this week asks you to love even those you don’t like. Wait a minute! Is that possible? What about the marriage that goes bad? Is the wife obliged to love the husband she can’t stand any more? What if he uses … Continue reading –>

04: Being and Doing – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 21, 2014 by Joyce GriffithOctober 25, 2014Joyce Griffith

[Thought Questions for Being and Doing October 21, 2014] 1. It’s not enough to be able to see and hear. Do you think it would be harder to follow Jesus if you were deaf? or blind? Didn’t have much intellectual understanding? Does a thorough knowledge of God and His plan of salvation earn you a place in His eternal kingdom? What did the … Continue reading –>

03: Enduring Temptation – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 14, 2014 by Joyce GriffithDecember 3, 2014Joyce Griffith

Introduction. “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.” James 1:12. What does our love for God have to do with victory over temptation? Will we be tempted even if we love God supremely? Will we be … Continue reading –>

02: The Perfecting of our Faith – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 7, 2014 by Joyce GriffithOctober 9, 2014Joyce Griffith

Introduction…After surgery and 74 days in rehab for a broken hip joint, I’m back and headed for full recovery! Don’t read this if you’ve never done anything stupid, but I put on an ankle weight and forgot it was on until I decided to leap from my bedroom to the kitchen. For a split second I was … Continue reading –>

A personal message from Joyce Griffith

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 5, 2014 by Joyce GriffithJune 7, 2014Joyce Griffith

[Joyce is the one who authors the Thought Starters posts each week for Sabbath School teachers.] I’m sorry I missed contributing to SSNET this week. My computer died. It was not a natural death but was caused by my moving it to a better part of the house. After a few days without a working … Continue reading –>

09: Christ, the Law and the Gospel – Thought Starters

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 28, 2014 by Joyce GriffithDecember 5, 2016Joyce Griffith

[Thought questions for Christ, the Law and the Gospel May 28, 2014] 1. Memory text. Does the word “but” in the memory text (John 1:17) trouble you in any way? (…the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth…through Jesus Christ…) Could you explain to someone that this does NOT mean that the law has … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
