Implicit Bias Playlist: Why our Prejudices Keep Singing the Same Songs

Sabbath School Net Posted on October 13, 2017 by Jennifer SchwirzerNovember 12, 2017avatar

One sunshiney Florida day, my family took a ride in our speedboat. The boat’s construction placed the passengers in the bow and the driver in the back. I’d jumped into the driver’s seat at the beginning of the ride, but later handed the wheel over to my brother. The family, looking out at beautiful scenery, … Continue reading –>

“When My Trophies At Last I Lay Down”

Sabbath School Net Posted on September 26, 2017 by William EarnhardtOctober 4, 2017avatar

Several years ago, when I first became a literature evangelist, I was attending an awards banquet for the best sales persons in the Southwest. I was awe struck by the nice shiny plaques and trophies the winners were receiving for leading the region in sales, hours worked, and other categories. I was so impressed that … Continue reading –>

Are Adventists Old-Covenant Christians? (Part 5)

Sabbath School Net Posted on September 26, 2017 by Marcos David TorresJuly 22, 2024avatar
Christ Standing Before Mercy Seat

In the previous post, we identified where Adventism fits in relation to covenant theology. The conclusion placed Adventism closest to the views espoused by the 2nd London Baptist Confession, a covenantal framework that falls under the tradition of the Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and Baptists known as “Covenantalism.” The post concluded by sharing some points on how this … Continue reading –>

The Communion Cup of the New Covenant

In the previous two posts,1 we reviewed the major systems of covenant thought in the Protestant tradition.  We split the systems into categories A and B – “A” being those that affirm the perpetuity of the law and “B” representing those that reject the perpetuity of the law. We also saw how Adventism’s understanding of … Continue reading –>

Are Adventists Old-Covenant Christians? (Part 3)

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 20, 2017 by Marcos David TorresJune 25, 2024avatar

In the previous post we examined the oldest systems of Protestant covenant thought. The two systems to emerge we labeled as belonging to “Category A: Covenantalism.” They include both the Westminster Confession and the Second London Baptist Confession. We also had the opportunity to see that Adventist theology has a lot of similarities with these … Continue reading –>

Are Adventists Old-Covenant Christians? (Part 1)

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 24, 2017 by Marcos David TorresJune 25, 2024avatar

A few years ago I went through one of the most defining seasons of my life. Having been raised a Seventh-day Adventist I had come to the place where I had to confront, once and for all, the legalistic faith I had developed. The journey was both difficult and exhilarating at the same time. The … Continue reading –>

What I Hate About Memorizing Scripture

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 19, 2017 by Marcos David TorresFebruary 16, 2018avatar
Woman Studying her Bible

Every Jesus-follower knows that memorizing scripture is super important to spiritual growth. Paul the apostle said “the word of God is alive and active” (Hebrews 4:12). As such, when we memorize the words of this book we are memorizing living words. These living words have many benefits – such as power over temptation (Psalm 119:9, 11), … Continue reading –>

Why the Church Needs Sabbath School

Sabbath School Net Posted on January 12, 2017 by Curtis HallApril 28, 2017avatar
Black man holding Bible in front of church.

There are many reasons why the church needs Sabbath School. Our foundation as a denomination is an outgrowth of serious Bible study. It led to an appreciation of the Heavenly Sanctuary, an understanding of the still-binding Moral law, including the seventh-day Sabbath. It led to a proper understanding of the state of the dead and … Continue reading –>

Waiting on the Lord

Sabbath School Net Posted on December 15, 2016 by Richard FergusonDecember 25, 2016avatar

When I became a Christian, I often wondered what people meant when they said they were “waiting on the Lord.” From my observations, it looked to me to be a very passive activity. So I asked people what they meant by “waiting on the Lord.” Most said that they were praying and waiting for the … Continue reading –>

The Theological Identity of the Remnant

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 3, 2016 by Ty GibsonOctober 24, 2017Ty Gibson

When the “remnant” is brought to view in Revelation, our attention is directed to God’s intent that the movement be defined by a specific theological construct: “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
