Is it your relationship with Jesus, or is it something else?
A rich young ruler came to Jesus with this question:

“Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” Matthew 19:16 NLT
Is this a profound question?
It’s really a shallow and selfish question. The young man asking this question is only interested in his own prosperity. A more noble question would be, “How can I express my love for you, Jesus?” Or “How can I be a [...]
Do you struggle in your Christian walk? Do you get discouraged because you see the great difference between your character and the character of Christ? Do you feel that you can never “win” the battle?
Recognizing our sinfulness is a good sign, because it demonstrates that we have some understanding of the beauty of Christ’s character. And it seems that if we struggle, we are in good company for Paul writes in Romans 7:14-23:

As a second grader walking home from school with a couple of other boys, for some reason I cannot explain, I thought it would be a good idea to throw some rocks at a car parked near a house. The lady in the house ran outside and demanded that I go get my mother and tell her what I did and come back there. I was surprised this lady “knew” my mother, but since she did I had no choice [...]
What does Paul mean in Romans 10:4 when he says Christ is the “end” of the law? Does this suggest that the law has been done away with? Find out what the Sabbath School author has to say on this week’s edition of “Ask the Author.”

What do you think of when you hear the word “Jubilee”? Did you know that word is used in the Bible?
“Then on the Day of Atonement in the fiftieth year, blow the ram’s horn loud and long throughout the land. Set this year apart as holy, a time to proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live there. It will be a jubilee year for you, when each of you may return to the land that belonged to your [...]
He had told her he loved her. Said she was beautiful. Promised her she would be special. Next thing she knew she was being dragged out of bed by the friends of him who had dragged her into bed, and he who had praised and flattered her just stood and watched her being dragged away.
Now she was kneeling half naked, humiliated before a popular religious icon. Eyes closed not wanting to be confronted by this religious leader, and not wanting [...]
History is full of the stories of great people who have had a monumental influence on the history of their church, their country or the world.

But what about ordinary people – people like you and me?
Most of us probably know at least intellectually that Christ would have died for just one sinner – a sinner like you or me.1 But have we stopped to consider what that means?
It means that [...]
Since this interesting question came up in our comments, I did a little research. And it leads me to conclude that the contemporaries of Christ were far more literate than we like to give them credit for.
Now I’m not an expert in history or biblical languages, nor a mathematician, but I’m thinking that we can draw a few deductions from the biblical story and other sources. The Bible demonstrates that Christ had an intimate knowledge of the Scriptures as early [...]
It was a make or break moment. His future was riding on what he would do. Confinement and possible death on one hand. Favor, prosperity and possible freedom on the other. He was a young man without a home, alone in a foreign land, living the life of a slave. He had few opportunities that promised anything more than a continued life of the same. Now everything was on the verge of change.
The odds had been [...]
In my personal devotions this morning, I read,
Then Gideon said to God, “If you are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as you promised, prove it to me in this way. I will put a wool fleece on the threshing floor tonight. If the fleece is wet with dew in the morning but the ground is dry, then I will know that you are going to help me rescue Israel as you promised.” Judges 6:36-37 NLT
