Transmission and Translation of the English Bible

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 18, 2020 by Maurice AshtonApril 18, 2026avatar
A detailed view of various King James Version Bibles, highlighting religious imagery.

In this current lesson study sequence, we are urged to use “Scripture only” as the basis for our faith. Most of us in this forum probably take the Bible as we read it today for granted. We may argue over which version is best, but we largely accept Scripture as the basis of our faith. … Continue reading –>

Sleeping in While Jesus Knocks at the Door

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 6, 2019 by William EarnhardtMay 14, 2019avatar

This week’s lesson from the Song of Solomon reminded me of a passage in Song of Solomon, chapter 5, that could be compared to Jesus knocking on the heart’s door of the church of Laodicea. Most of us are familiar with this passage in Revelation: “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you … Continue reading –>

Is There More to the Seal of God Than We Thought?

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 15, 2018 by Phil van der KliftJuly 1, 2018avatar

Since none of us want to receive the mark of the beast, perhaps we should ask whether there’s more to the seal of God and the mark of the beast than we usually consider. So let’s look a little deeper.  The Image of God The Sabbath School Lesson for Tuesday, June 12, 2018, states that in … Continue reading –>

Was the Atonement to Appease an Angry God or an Angry Race?

Sabbath School Net Posted on May 3, 2018 by William EarnhardtMay 9, 2018avatar

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”  Romans 5:8 Was the atonement and sacrifice of Christ a matter of vengeance? Did God the Father send His Son to die because He needed to see someone suffer for the rebellion?  Do we serve a God … Continue reading –>

Sunday: The Love of the Father

Not too long before the cross, Jesus spoke with His inner circle about how people can come to the Father through Him. It was then that Philip said: “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us” (John 14:8, NKJV). How did Jesus respond to Philip? John 14:9. What does His response teach us about the Father? … Continue reading –>

Monday: Son of God/Son of Man

Sabbath School Net Posted on January 14, 2018 by Sabbath School LessonOctober 11, 2018avatar

As Christians, we believe that Jesus was fully God and fully human. This union of the Divine and humanity makes His perspective unique as to what is important on earth and important for eternity. That we can’t understand how He could have a divine/human nature doesn’t nullify this truth any more than someone’s lack of … Continue reading –>

God’s Law: The One, the Two, the Ten and the Many

Sabbath School Net Posted on September 10, 2017 by Inge AndersonSeptember 27, 2017avatar

Law isn’t very popular in our society – especially moral law. Doing your “own thing” is promoted in popular media and commercials. Postmodern culture is allergic to absolutes, and laws are absolutes. Law even seems to have a bad reputation in Christian circles. After all, Paul said that the Law is no longer needed after … Continue reading –>

A Short History of the King James Version of the Bible

Sabbath School Net Posted on July 14, 2017 by Maurice AshtonFebruary 13, 2023avatar

The King James version of the Bible is often considered the gold standard for modern translations, but few of us are familiar with its history, mandate, publication and early printing. This article provides a brief glimpse in the hope that we will understand it and its historical context a little better. The Bibles in Use … Continue reading –>

Three Logical Examples of Why It Is Reasonable to Believe the Bible

Sabbath School Net Posted on June 1, 2017 by William EarnhardtJune 13, 2017avatar

Last Sunday, at a graduation party, I visited with one of my former students from the Adventist school where I teach and give Bible studies. She is now attending a public high school in a different city, and she told me how sad she is that at least half of her school population is self-proclaimed atheist. … Continue reading –>

At a camp meeting 40 years later, I happened to see Dr. I. demonstrating some kind of health product, if I remember correctly. (In my mind, I see only the image of him, much older, but still looking much like he did when I was a student, with a friend by my side.) I lingered a little but did not introduce myself. I briefly wondered whether he recognized me. I’m fairly sure that I was as recognizable to him as he was to me.

Had he changed? Or did he still feel superior in his “humility”? Should I talk to him? I didn’t know how to approach him, and was busy with friends. I still don’t know whether I should have said something. (Maybe I’m just a coward.)

If God wants him to see my story, his and my identity are clear enough in this post, that God can direct him to it.
